Langebaan Lagoon Flow & Surface Dynamics Flood Cycle
How tidal current and SSW wind combine to dictate chop height and safe speed runs
Water flows South into the lagoon from the open bay. Because wind is SSW (blowing North), wind and surface current oppose each other in the deep channel, creating lively rolling chop, but filling sandbanks (Kleinbaai, Shark Bay) with deep, flat water.
Water drains North toward the open sea. The surface flow flattens out chop along the channel. As high tide passes, sunset speed runs flatten out beautifully, but be mindful of the current past Schaapen Island if wind fades.
| Rig / Combo | Lagoon Wind Range | Ideal Conditions | Today's Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.6m Loftsails Blade + 118L JP | 12 – 18 kt | Light lulls, early flood | Good for 12:00–13:00 warmup, overpowered later |
| 5.6m Severne S-1 Pro + 95L Tabou | 18 – 24 kt | Punchy medium-high breeze | Optimal Choice for Afternoon Session |
| 5.0m Severne S-1 Pro + 95L Tabou | 22 – 28 kt | Solid afternoon crank | Prime backup if channel gusts cross 28 kt |
